SXSW Bowling A Success
Much beer was drunk, many slices of pizza consumed and a whole lot of bowling took place. We had over 300 bowlers and another 100 spectators … that is over 400 geeks who really do love bowling!
Team Refresh took first place with an amazing two game score of 1481! Team “Lebowski” and team “nGen Works” took 2nd and 3rd. And of course, team “beer liberation front” stayed true to their name and took first for most beer drunk by a single team. Check out the scores for yourself, http://geekslovebowling.com/scores.
We had about 4 weeks from when we took the reins to host the event this year till SXSW and we weren’t sure we were actually going to be able to pull it off. It actually proved a really good team building exercise as the whole nclud team really pulled together to make sure we didn’t miss anything and threw one hell of an event. Cindy worked her magic and got the word out, rounded up some amazing sponsors, hand-made trophies and even got prizes! Alex whipped up a great design in just a day and Dan and I built it out and set it up that weekend. Dan actually helped us get the site in order before he even officially started with nclud!
It was a wild and crazy time and from what we hear everyone enjoyed it. We are looking forward to next year; we’ve already got some big and exciting ideas to help make bowling even bigger and better!
If we you were not able to make it out this year, you should definitely check out the photos on flickr: http://flickr.com/groups/geekslovebowling/. And if you did make it out, what are you waiting for, join the group and add your photos!
Also, one last public thank you to Jason Beaird and Kevin Tamura for volunteering and helping with registration … without them we would have had very long lines and very angry bowlers; you guys really saved the day! I’d also like to thank Kevin Smith for lighting the fire under us to get this thing together and ensure bowling happened this year! Thank you to Craig Cook and Marianne Masculino for helping Cindy with those awesome hand-made trophies (we hear it was originally Craig’s idea!).
And lets not forget our wonderful sponsors! They brought prizes likes Xbox games, copies of Mac Office, slick swag, and even an iPod! They also made sure we had plenty of busses, lots of free food, free beer … oh yeah, and made it so we all could bowl for free; heck, everything was free. Thank you to nGen Works, Sidebar Creative, Internet Explorer 7, Microsoft Expression Studio, Silverlight, Mac Office 2008, Opera, ma.gnolia, Electric Pulp, 200ok, Viget Labs, and Mixx.com.
Oh yes! And a special thank you to the team at 200ok for building our Live site at http://live.geekslovebowling.com.
We hope everyone enjoyed bowling at SXSW this year and we hope to see you all again next year!

I don’t think people realize how much work you all put into this, but I’m sure they’re thankful. It would’ve been a shame if bowling hadn’t happened this year, so hats off to the entire nclud team, including Cindy “Running around like a mad woman” Li, for making it such a success.
And mad props to my fellow Team Refresh bowlers, without whom we would’ve never been able to bring the title back. I certainly didn’t bowl to my potential, but they picked up the slack.
Until next year…
@Patrick, thanks for the comment. Cindy really was amazing, especially the day of the event.
Where is that golden keyboard trophy anyway?
High fives all around to everyone who helped organize the best event of SXSW ’08.
Also don’t forget the man himself, Jeremy Carbaugh, for hooking up http://live.geekslovebowling.com! Somebody give that boy a raise!
YES! Big thank you to Jeremy and the 200ok team … you guys ROCK and the live site was awesome.
Thanks for organizing one of the best nights of SXSW ’08! Cheers.
This was again THE best night of SXSW! Thanks so much to everyone at nclud for making it happen. I know we’ve already started talking about plans for next year.
Good times… Thanks for putting it together!
