We’re happy to announce the launch of The Washington Post iPhone app today! The Post contracted us to do the original information architecture as well as visual design for their first native iPhone application. It’s out, available and getting a good amount of buzz within just hours of being released.

This is our third major online publication native iPhone application launch this month, following Politico and Mashable. It’s been nothing short of exciting working with some of the most influential publishers in the world for their respective markets and helping each design their first iPhone experience. The team at the Washington Post is no exception.

Working with teams from strategy, marketing and of course, editorial … the objective was to design a compelling experience for the iPhone audience around one of the world’s most popular and well-respected news outlets. Our specific focus within this endeavor was on creative strategy, discovery, information architecture as well as visual user-interface design.

Disclaimer:
We were contracted to design the initial visual user-interface experience. We are not responsible for on going design or development efforts. We were also not involved in pricing or subscription based strategy discussions/decisions.

Looks very slick - nice portfolio piece!

Why is the mock iPhone on Rogers though? They do a lot of WaPo reading up in French Canada? :)

We like the Rodgers iPhone frame for UI design concepting. And yes, the Washington Post has a huge international presence.

Are you excited for the iPad?

I wouldn’t say we’re excited about the iPad specifically; but we are extremely excited about what the introduction of such a product means for the future. It’ll be the first mass produced device that really gets us to (allows us to) re-think “interaction design”—and that excites us.

We’ll be working on some iPad concepts; so keep a look out.

It’s very funny model they run with this App product…
They try really hard to hide actual content but fully automate advertisements which the user cannot avoid…
If this is the model that places like Fox and other Newscorp outlets will spruik then they will die a quick and cold dead in App land…
I will never buy a news App for the very reason that, like game and other Apps… I am already paying to stop the advertisements, I am not paying the vendor to chew up my bandwidth and download limits on SPAM i am already trying to keep out of my email in-box.
I already paid for the news, I did not pay for the vendor to chew up my download limit!

Photo galleries are easy to browse and relatively comprehensive. Nice!

Any word yet on iPad specific site designs that you guys are working on? I love (absolutely love) the iPhone app for The Washington Post that you guys did. I’m considering getting an iPad for my wife and I, so I am just curious. I’ll bet that whatever you come up with will be fabulous. And if it functions as smoothly as the Wash. Post App does, I’ll be first in line to download it!

Thanks for the complements regarding our work with WPost! And yes, we do have some exciting iPad apps launching this year ... keep an eye out!

Are you still developing this app? I just upgraded from 1.5.4 to 1.5.5 and it crashes every time I try to start it. I am on iOS 3.1.3. The previous version worked fine.

    Thanks!

    Matt,

Unfortunately, no, we do not currently support the development effort with The Washington Post iPhone application. We’ll try and pass the information along to their internal development team.

    Thanks!
